If you flowed out of Brazos Hall in Austin, Texas at the conclusion of the VIBE showcase you were left with two dominant impressions: R&B/Soul is in safe hands and Yo Gotti has more hit records than you may remember.
Partnering with Bud Light, the best option for Thursday afternoon at SXSW was headlined by the King of Memphis, fresh off the release of his latest album The Art of Hustle. Taking the stage with his DJ, DJ Smallz, Gotti instantly connected with the fans and running through his classics and you really remember how long he has been releasing hits. Fans would erupt with each single, from “5 Star Bitch” to “Got Dem Racks” to what hits the hardest today “Down in the DM.”
Prior to the ride through Memphis, there was an invigoration of soul through the building kicked off by the Midwest stylings of BJ The Chicago Kid. The Windy City vocal wonder dazzled the crowd with singles from his latest effort, In My Mind, and his notable features. If the voice wasn’t enough, BJ showed his skills playing a drum stationed to the right of his center for singing.
Serving as a mix of rising stars, BJ shared the stage with the man who followed him, Anderson .Paak, for their joint effort “The Waters.” After listening to the fans and realizing he needed to switch microphones to the one his Chicago companion was using, .Paak brought forth his band, The Free Nationals, which set off the vibe for the dual talent whose work on the drum was just as amazing as he on the mic.
