MTV has made the homie for their Woodie Awards in Austin, Texas at SXSW yearly. With the biggest boss Rick Ross holding down the duties of hosting, along with serving a performance, this year’s festivities were can’t miss.
The Woodies are an award ceremony that doesn’t carry a long list of awards – this year’s show only has four – but it wouldn’t be right if we didn’t offer our opinion while we are based in Austin. Check out the 2017 Woodie edition of the sG Awards to see who also could have won the honor of the night.
Ed Sheeran – “Touch” (Little Mix) – Winner
Chance the Rapper – “Ultralight Beam” (Kanye West)
Elle King – “Jealous/Can’t Feel My Face” (Nick Jonas / The Weekend)
James Bay – “Hymn for the Weekend” (Coldplay)
MO – “Love on the Brain” (Rihanna)
Panic! At The Disco – ”Starboy” (The Weeknd)
SG Winner: Chance the Rapper
It’s incredibly hard to vote against the performance here of Ed Sheeran but there is some love that should be thrown to Lil Chano from 79th who was able to flip a song he was already on and deliver a good cover. Love goes out to both artists.

Songwriter of the Year
PARTYNEXTDOOR – Winner
SG Winner: PARTYNEXTDOOR
There is no way to deny the power that PARTY put into the past year. IF you had a song that you added to your all time favorites this year it’s likely the OVO representative let it flow from his hands. Last year’s “Work” take over from Rihanna, PARTY did it. “Shining” that is taking over the radio now from DJ Khaled, Beyonce and Jay Z, PARTY penned the queen’s pieces. It’s undeniable here.
Woodie to Watch
Khalid – Winner
Lil Uzi Vert
SG Winner: Russ
To be honest, we would have picked Khalid too. He has Grammy nominations written all over him. But another one to watch for is Russ. “What They Want” took over the charts and was an impressive intro for many. There is believed to be more in the chamber and if the first was any indication of what’s to come it will be worth watching for.

Woodie of the Year
The Chainsmokers – Winner
Chance the Rapper
Twenty One Pilots
SG Winner: Solange
The Chainsmokers have had an amazing year, Chance the Rapper placed himself in the upper echelon of hip-hop and others in the category did amazing jobs but Solange released a culture-altering and sonically exquisite piece of work. With her hands all over the creation of the project, we must look to putting this year’s crown on her.
