1. Kendrick Lamar – D A M N
Just like the title of Kendrick Lamar’s fourth studio album, that’s all you can really say after listening to this great album! This album shows us growth, pure confidence, and vulnerability from Kendrick as well as pure HIP-HOP! Props to Kid Capri with the drops on the album, giving us that nostalgic 90s feel again. He raised the bar yet again with this album
2. Jay Z – 4:44
4:44 definitely disrupts the Top 5 favorite Jay Z albums of all time! This album found a very private Jay Z in his most vulnerable state yet. From issues of being a man not knowing how to deal with emotions, his marriage, his mother’s sexuality, being a dad and more; how can we not love this guy? I swear this guy never seems to amaze his fans/audience. If there is another album, what can he talk about after this vulnerable project?
3. SZA – ctrl
Ctrl serves as a debut album from TDE’s first lady and she did NOT disappoint. I mean she’s the most nominated female of the 2018 Grammys, which says enough in itself. Simply searching to find her true self and to be confident in it, SZA welcomed us into her world and didn’t care what anyone had to say about it!
4. Migos – Culture
Culture is a VIBE. Not just any vibe either, an ENTIRE year’s worth of VIBES! Serving as the second studio album from the biggest rap trio of this generation, Migos solidified themselves in the Rap community. This album also showcased Offset and Takeoff coming into their own forcing Quavo to share the spotlight. Hosting one of the hottest songs “Bad and Boujee” that earned a shout out from Donald Glover during his acceptance speech at the Golden Globes, this is definitely a CLASSIC Migos album!
5. Daniel Caesar – Freudian
FINALLY!!! An R&B album that provokes all of the right emotions! Toronto singer Daniel Caesar released his debut album this year and from the minute I pressed play, he had my full attention. This album is beautiful and screams LOVE. Oh and he’s nominated for a Grammy! This is the perfect soundtrack for the lovers and cuffing season.
6. Calvin Harris – Funk wav Bounces Vol. 1
Calvin Harris was always cool but with his latest album, he solidified his stamp in music. From the production, features to vibes his Funk wav Bounces Vol. 1 album gives, this is an instant classic for the Scottish EDM producer. Who knew an EDM could have so much funk?!
7. Big Sean – I Decided.
Many people forget about this gem that Big Sean let out but right after “Bounce Back,” Big Sean released “Moves,” this album and went on a run.
